Arcbound Update #6

Unlocking Unicorns, Building Trust, & The Long Haul

A LETTER FROM THE FOUNDERS

How do you build trust with clients when you don't share the same life experiences?

We continue to ask this question as we aim to serve a diverse and ever-growing client population.

And it came up again a few weeks ago, when Bryan had lunch with Scott Schiavone, a wealth management advisor at Northwestern Mutual.

Back in 2003, Scott had to take a bunch of continuing education classes. But he failed one of them: “Understanding the Older Client.”

Why?

Though he was in his mid-thirties, he thought he had a strong understanding of what older clients wanted and needed, so he didn't think he needed to study the material.

Almost 20 years later, we asked him how he builds trust with clients who readily hand over millions of dollars—essentially, their financial future. He shared that story, and two elements key to advancing any sales process, client journey, or relationship at large:

1) Ask about what's important to them. If you haven't asked about their priorities—both personal and professional—how can you understand where they are, where they want to go, and how you can help them get there? That includes why they live where they do, who's a part of their family, what they want to achieve professionally, and how they like to vacation.

2) Show them that you understand. Can you articulate to them what they are trying to achieve, with your services being a solution to their existing problems? If the answer is "yes," you're that much closer to securing the results you both want to see.

The bottom line: when you can engage effectively, understanding someone's experience and how you can help them, everyone wins.

ARCING TOWARD

Mike Porath: Founder of The Mighty

Mike believes in the power of stories, the strength of communities and the beauty of the human spirit.

He learned the craft of storytelling as an award-winning journalist and executive at ABC News, NBC News, The New York Times and AOL. Traveling through nearly 50 countries brought him so much joy. But then he found myself on a more meaningful adventure when his young daughter was diagnosed with a rare disease, Dup15q syndrome. Connecting with others was what helped him and his wife the most. They learned what community was all about.

Then, Mike created The Mighty to help people find each other and share their experiences around their own health challenges. He began with three stories a day. Five years later, The Mighty has over 3 million members and their stories have been viewed billions of times. Through research studies with Harvard University and others, The Mighty has shown that they’re having a real impact. They're improving people’s health outcomes while gaining so much insight on how people experience more than 1,000 different health conditions.Mike has also been an instrumental member on Arcbound's advisory board.
