Arcbound Update #12

Building Relationships, Taking Risks, and Quiet Quitting

A LETTER FROM THE FOUNDERS

Discovering how you can help people will prepare you for the recession.

When you run a business (or own your own), there are few things scarier than a looming recession. And while you can plan for the eventuality of it, you can’t ever truly be ready unless you’re willing to take some risks.

When the pandemic first hit, we weren’t sure what would come next for Arcbound. We were barely two years old, and we had to make a name for ourselves while the world around us was shifting under our feet. So, we decided to take a risk.

We didn’t advertise who we were or what we did. Instead, we set up over 100+ meetings in three months and talked to people about the problems they needed help solving. These conversations led to more connections, and, ultimately, we built the client list we have today.

We bet on ourselves by focusing on others—making it all about how we could help people become the best version of who they are.

The shifting economic landscape offers a similar opportunity—not just for us, but for you.

People are always going to have problems that need to be solved. And the beautiful thing about that is there will always be someone who can help them find the best solution.

There is absolutely no reason why that person can’t be you.

Now is the time to take the risk. You can go all in on yourself by focusing on how you can support others.

Start conversations with the people you think you may be able to help. Ask each of them to connect you to one person they know.

Then, you’ll be top of mind for solving people’s problems when they need it most.

And the risk you took will feel like insurance.

PERSONAL BRANDING

Every Founder Needs a Personal Brand

Founders wake up thinking about what they’re creating.

They also know that the company they are building today likely isn’t the company they’ll be growing tomorrow.

That’s why your personal brand as a founder is so important. You’re the face of the company in its early days—you’re who people think about when they wonder if they need a particular product and how it works. And you’re the one driving connection and community.

ARCBOUND HAPPENINGS

Several weeks ago, Bryan and Carson went to dinner with Jeffrey Evans from MANTIS Venture Capital. Over dinner, while sharing stories about his work with The Chainsmokers, Jeffrey also taught Bryan and Carson something valuable about how good VCs do their work.

The longer their conversation continued, the more Bryan and Carson could see that the MANTIS team isn't just investors who write checks. Once they've selected a company to work with, Jeffrey and the other folks at MANTIS VC spend time engaged with that company, helping them recruit new employees or determine what the next big step is. It isn't just about the brand for MANTIS, it's also about the people they are working with. They're building long-lasting relationships.

Bryan and Carson walked away from dinner impressed and challenged. Jeffrey and MANTIS are setting an important standard, and since that conversation, Bryan and Carson have been thinking about how Arcbound is building relationships that last long into the future. After all, it's what Jeffrey would do.

Religicide: Confronting the Roots of Anti-Religious Violence by Jerry White

In Religicide, Jerry White and his co-author Georgette F. Bennett tap into their decades of activism, inter-religious engagement, and people-to-people diplomacy to delve into a gripping examination of contemporary religicides.

Religion-related violence is the fastest-spreading type of violence worldwide. Attacks on religious minorities follow a clear pattern and are preceded by early warning signs. Until now, such violence had no name, let alone a set of policies designed to identify and prevent it. A unique attempt to create a new moral and legal category alongside other forms of persecution and mass murder, Religicide explores the roots of atrocities such as the Armenian Genocide, the Holocaust, the Bosnian war, and other human rights catastrophes.
