Arcbound Update #21

Unique Experiences, Disruption, and Rebuilding

FROM THE FOUNDERS

We left our hearts in Sausalito.

When we started Arcbound four years ago, we knew we wanted to create something special. Unique. Surprising.

It was about helping people find and follow their arcs, but it was also about connecting people to one another in new and exciting ways. Through podcast interviews, social media interactions, and email introductions, we connect our clients to people who look, think, act, and lead differently from them throughout our time together.

This weekend, we got to make those connections in person.

The Arcbound Experience celebrated two things—the 30th birthday of our CEO, Bryan Wish, and the progress we have made as a company. Over 100 people flew in from around the globe for two days of inspiring conversations, powerful connections, and prodigious insights.

After an evening of music and networking in Pacific Heights, guests spent Saturday in sunny Sausalito learning about building a thought leadership brand, what it means to be an underdog, and the impact of creator monetization. The insights came from speakers like Charlene Li, Gautam Mukunda, Meghana Dhar, Tyler Denk, Morgan Ingram, Agnes Budzyn, Asad Awan, and Anne Lee Skates.

The combination of panel insights, Northern California sun, and how it felt to relate to people in person, with no other objective in mind, created a spark of energy that only happens when you put a lot of intelligent, passionate people in the same place. For so many of the conversations that took place, Friday and Saturday were only the beginning.

The Arcbound Experience and other future events like it are part of our vision for a world where people can connect to Arcbound and each other both online and in-person, and can build long-lasting relationships that strengthen and grow their individual arcs. We know that unique and special connections will come out of this past weekend, and we cannot wait to see what you do with them.

THE ONE AWAY SHOW

Casey Berman, Founder and Managing Partner at Camber Creek, joined Bryan on The One Away Show to discuss how he built his organization efficiently, what it takes to make it as an investor, and why recognizing trends is so important. Casey’s unique strategy for creating leverage as an investor has kept us following his journey in real estate technology investments closely over the past five years.

BEHIND THE SCENES ON PERSONAL BRANDING

When we work with clients to build their personal brand, we start with their values. How they engage with the world and what makes them thrive (or what gets them stuck) is the most valuable introduction to what they want to share with an audience.

If you’re building your personal brand (or refreshing the one you already have), we recommend you start by writing down your Top 5 Values. Not sure where to start? Try one of these questions:

  • How are you operating in the world?

  • What makes you happy?

  • What makes you angry?

  • How do you know when someone crosses a boundary of yours?

  • What is one thing you think you could change about the world in the next 5-10 years?

Your Top 5 Values will help you build a vision and mission that you can turn to no matter where you are in your life.

FOR YOUR HEADPHONES

Faced with what he thought to be a life-ending diagnosis, John Gargano gave up and fell into addiction. His addiction led to a prison sentence, during which John built himself back up from scratch. He was eventually released under President Obama’s clemency program, but John’s story doesn’t end there.

John’s story is inspiring, and his interview with Jim McCann (1-800-Flowers) is gripping from start to finish. We think you’ll enjoy this episode just as much as we did. You can find Celebrations Chatter everywhere you get your podcasts, or at the link below.

The Disruption Mindset: Why Some Organizations Transform While Others Fail by Charlene Li

Growth is always hard, and disruptive growth is exponentially harder. It requires companies to make tough decisions in the face of daunting uncertainties: Should we bet our company’s future on next-generation customers or today’s reliable ones? Should we abandon our current business model for an entirely new one? Making bold changes demands bold leadership and, often, massive cultural transformation.

Over the years, Li has seen some organizations beat the odds and succeed at becoming disruptive: Adobe, ING Bank, Nokia, Southern New Hampshire University, and T-Mobile, among them. Their stories make it clear that organizations don’t have to be tech start-ups or have the latest innovations to transform. Instead, they need a disruptive mindset.

Drawing on interviews with some of the most audacious people driving disruptive transformation today, Li will inspire leaders at all levels to lead disruptive transformation in their organizations, communities, and society.

Being quiet is comfortable. Keeping things the way they've been is comfortable. And all comfort has done is maintain the status quo.
